How Chelsea Miller Traded a Desk Job for a Modeling Career...
Working within the plus market has given Miller a bird’s-eye view of
fashion and modeling’s shift toward body diversity. “The industry has
changed hugely, but I came in right when the change was happening,” she
explains. “It’s really incredible. At IMG, they don’t have a plus-size
board, we’re just on the mainboard with all the other models, and that
is revolutionary for a leading agency.” Though plus-size models are
rapidly becoming as visible and prominent as their straight-size peers,
Miller feels there is still work to be done, particularly when it comes
to cosmetics advertising. “I would love to see a beauty campaign come
out with different sizes of women. There is more advertising now using
plus sizes, but I have yet to see a beauty campaign that really uses
plus-size models…I saw my sister in L.A. shooting for BareMinerals and
the whole time I was thinking, How amazing would it be to have a couple of curvy girls in there! Beauty is so diverse, you can’t only show one body type when representing that.”
Like Edie and Olympia Campbell or Gigi and Bella Hadid, the Millers
are becoming a modeling sister act, but don’t expect to see the two
posing together just yet. “We’ve talked about it quite a bit and we’ve
had a couple people approach us, but we want to make sure it is
something cool. We’re waiting for the right concept, right photographer
and idea.” Still, their shared experiences modeling have served to bring
the two closer together. “My sister and I had a love-hate relationship
growing up, but now we’re like best friends. When we were kids, she was
stealing my clothes or my makeup, hiding them in her locker at school.
Now I’m like, ‘Can I steal that bag?’”
